Six ways to be more eco-conscious in the salon.
Being more eco-conscious in the salon is not only good for our planet – and your salon business – but it's increasingly important to every salon client that walks through your door. By making more sustainable choices in your daily routines, you also have the potential to increase client loyalty through aligned values.
Explore six tips to help your salon be more eco-conscious and sustainable during the warmer months and beyond...
Work with your staff to use only what you need. Only run your taps when necessary. Water-efficient products like eco shower heads are a great investment to conserve water, which saves you energy and money.
Did you know? Water saving aerators can save up to 40% of heat, energy and water!
- Plastic – to reduce plastic waste in the salon environment, adopt recycling. Check product bottles and other plastic waste to see if they can be recycled before disposing of them.
- Aluminium foils – these can fill the rubbish bin quickly on a busy day at the salon, so make sure you're using foils that are made of recyclable materials.
Keep your salon cool by turning down temperature settings where possible. Set the backwash water temperature a little lower than usual, turn down the temperatures of your salon tools where possible. Every little helps!
This makes clients feel invited to enter your salon, it creates a bit of a breeze plus you can reduce usage of the air-con, which has a positive effect on your energy consumption.
Energy-saving towels are the same length as regular towels, but they’re half of the width (30x80cm). They have multiple advantages:
- Use 40% less energy – saving laundry costs and reducing dependence on non-renewable resources
- Require 15% less water – use less water per wash for huge long-term savings
- Lower carbon emissions – reduce your carbon footprint and show you're making a positive change
- Use less detergents – cut down on harsh chemicals in every wash cycle
- Last 2-3 times longer – towels look and feel good for much longer so you can replace them less often
Your lights need to be bright (or dim) enough for you to do your best work, yet flattering enough to show off a client's true hair or skin tone. In the summer months, you can more easily rely on natural light, however waiting areas, your front desk, and any back-of-house spaces could still be upgraded. Energy-saving LED lights are worth considering here – whilst the initial cost is higher, they last about 60 times as long, so you'll save that money in the long run and lower your energy usage.
